Madonna is a modern serif display font best used for packaging and branding. It is made up of perfect circles and thick strokes that have a 45 degree angle cutoff. It is intended for both print and screen at 48pts and up. I was inspired by type used on early Madonna album covers and chose to name my font after her. I enjoy flipping through high-end fashion magazines like V and Vogue. Old school, black and white Hollywood glamour also intrigues me as clean and sexy. Madonna shows how powerful thick and thin blend well together whether used for fashion or promotion.
The initial characteristics my font were based off of Hollywood glam of the 1930s. Hats were worn at an angle which inspired the thick cutoffs shown in Madonna. Each letter was designed starting from a perfect circle.
After finishing my sketches, I used Illustrator to vectorize and made sure all letters and numerals were consistent with one another. I then imported each letter to FontLab and set the metrics and kerning one by one. Lastly, I exported the final file.
